36% of the children in our city and surrounding areas are either overweight or obese.
This is above the national average of 33%, even more alarmingly 22% of children start primary school overweight. The pressure and responsibility for primary schools to promote a healthy and active lifestyle has never been greater.
Childhood obesity is not just a local problem, the World Health Organization (WHO) regards childhood obesity as one of the most serious global public health challenges for the 21st century, with the UK currently having one of the highest overall obesity rates amongst developed countries.
To combat these alarming statistics the government has doubled it’s commitment to the funding of primary school PE. Sport and Physical Education is now high on the agenda and under the national spotlight in schools across the country.
The funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on improving PE and sport. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. This means that they should use the premium to:
- Develop or add to the PE and sport activities that their school already offers
- Make improvements now that will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
4 out of 5 children are not meeting the recommended daily physical activity levels.
60 minutes of moderate activity everyday.
Indicators of such improvement would include:
The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity, kick-starting healthy active lifestyles.
The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school and used as a tool for whole school improvement.
Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport.
Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
Increased participation in competitive sport.
